FAQ

  • General Questions

    • How long will it take to replace a roof?

Penn Ohio Roofing provides one-day installation for a roof replacement. Home 365 reports that your replaced roof can yield upwards of 85% of its investment cost when it comes time to sell. This is a great investment that only takes a short amount of time.

    • How much does the average roof replacement cost?

Many variables lead to roof replacement prices varying. Your roof’s pitch, type of shingles, the number of shingle layers on the roof, and the general condition of the roof all contribute to the pricing. Typically, the best way to see how much your roof replacement will cost is to schedule a free estimate with our roofing pros at Penn Ohio Roofing.

    • Which type of roof is best?

The best type of roof is asphalt roofing shingles because they are lightweight, inexpensive, and easy for roofing companies to install. Asphalt shingles are the best choice for most houses in Greater Pittsburgh. They come in layered sheets to give the illusion of more expensive single shingles, such as cedar and slate, which are installed one shingle at a time.

    • Do you work with most insurance companies?

Yes, we work directly with insurance companies to assist in your claims for a roof repair or replacement. Talk to our roofing contractors to learn about the companies we work with.

    • When is the best time to replace my roof?

The best time for a roofing contractor to replace your roof is any time in spring, summer, or fall with a temperature above 30 degrees. You can schedule your roof replacement for a clear day with the number on our website.

    • What can I do about discolored shingles? Do they need to be replaced?

Discolored shingles are darkened from algae due to high humidity. The discoloration of your shingles won't hurt the integrity of your roof. You don't have to worry about a roof replacement if the discoloration is your only concern. However, discolored shingles do decrease your curb appeal. Consider using bleach solutions to remove the algae.

    • How do I recognize roofing damage in my Pittsburgh home?

If you’re concerned that your roof is damaged, the first step is to arrange for an interior and exterior roof check. A roofer will identify any cracked shingles, dark stains, sagging, rotting and mold, or leaks and water damage. It’s also helpful in determining the age of your roof, even if there aren’t any apparent spots of corrosion or loss.

    • How often should I replace my roof?

The lifespan of your roof depends on the roofing material used. A well-constructed shingle roof in the greater Pittsburgh area typically lasts between 15 and 20 years. After that, you may need a roof repair.

    • Is there anything I need to do to before the roofing company starts?

Roof replacement and repair is a messy and noisy process. Consider going somewhere else for about two to three hours once roofing contractors start removing the old shingles to avoid all the noise. Keep pets in mind, too. There’s no way around it, but we do all we can to minimize hassle and inconvenience during the roofing process.

    • Will I have to replace gutters and downspouts at the same time?
You don't necessarily need to have your gutters and downspouts replaced. If your gutters and downspouts are in good shape, the roofing pros at Penn Ohio Roofing will work around them to avoid any damage. If your gutters are in relatively good shape but need minor repairs, we can provide this service too. Penn Ohio Roofing is a full-service roofing contractor.
  • IKO Roof Pro Craftsman Premier Contractor

    • What is the IKO Pro4 roof system?

The IKO Pro4 roof system combines four roofing products:

      • GoldShield, ArmourGard, and StormShield eave protection defend your roof against wind-driven rain and ice dams. IKO recommends eave protection in valleys and around protrusions like vents and skylights.
      • RoofGard-Cool Grey or Stormtite synthetic underlayment options are chosen based on the local climate.
      • Leading Edge Plus starter strips are installed at eaves and rakes as an extra line of defense where it’s needed most.
      • Three ridge cap shingle options give us choices for matching the profile of the shingle.

Unlike most other brands, IKO does not require that we use their underlayment or do a full tear-off of the old roof to get the better warranty.

    • What do home inspectors like about IKO roofs?

IKO's shingles perform up to the industry's highest standards and have several properties that home inspectors (and potential buyers) like:

      • Standard wind ratings: 3-tab IKO Marathon shingles are rated for 60 mph. All others are rated for 110 mph (ASTM D3018 Class F), a rating that increases to 130 mph with the enhanced installation.
      • Impact resistance: IKO Cambridge IR is the brand’s impact-resistant shingles. They have a Class 4 Impact Resistance rating, which means they weren’t damaged in lab tests by a 1.25” diameter steel ball dropped twice onto the same spot from 12 feet. The downside is that this is the brand’s only option.
      • Class A fire rating: Class A or 1 is the top rating for resistance to fire spread. All IKO lines have a Class A rating.
      • Algae resistance: All but Marathon and Cambridge Cool Colors have algae-resistant granules. Those with algae resistance are warranted against staining for 5 years (Marathon AR) or 10 years (all other lines).

    • What are the benefits for the homeowner of choosing IKO roofing materials?
      • IKO Industries currently has an A+ rating with the US Better Business Bureau.
      • Homeowners will find products in the shingle style and color range to complement their homes.
      • Three-tab: Marathon Plus AR shingles have a 25-year warranty They boast a classic, neat appearance in 10 colors.
      • Architectural Series: The only shingle in this category is the Cambridge. It is the top-selling IKO shingle. Color availability varies slightly, but 12-15 colors are sold in most regions.
      • Performance Series: Cambridge IR (6 colors) and Dynasty (11 colors) include ArmourZone that strengthens the nailing zone against rips. These series are produced in 6-8 colors and vary by region. High-definition profiles produce the type of shadowing seen on a wood shingle and shake roofs.
      • Premium Series: Armourshake (5 colors), Crowne Slate (2 colors) and Royal Estate (4 colors) mimic high-end shakes and slate with deep profiles. These are beefy shingle lines that withstand wind very well.
      • IKO has solid warranties, and the top warranty is easier to qualify for than top warranties from most other brands.
      • IKO makes 10 shingle lines. Eight are covered with a lifetime limited warranty, the highest percentage among leading shingle brands. We use approved hip/ridge shingles to qualify for the best warranty coverage on your roof.
  • GAF Master Elite Contractor

    • Is the Golden Pledge Warranty an extended warranty?

      Technically speaking, it's a factory-certified roof installation.

An extended warranty generally covers a product longer or for a broader range of problems. For example, an extended warranty on a TV might give you another few years.

But what if your TV fails because it was plugged into a surge protector that wasn't covered by the warranty? Most likely, the warranty won't cover that.

Our Golden Pledge Warranty is like your TV's warranty provider that came to your home, checked the electrical system, and certified the entire system. Then, when the TV fails, it'd be covered.

    • Where do I get the Golden Pledge Warranty and how much does it cost?

As a GAF Master Elite Contractor, Penn Ohio Roofing is able to provide the Golden Pledge Warranty on your residential roofing project.

Every roof is different and requires its own price quote, but in general, our top-of-the-line roof with premium materials runs 10-12% higher than a baseline roof.

However, considering that a warranty claim on that baseline roof may force you to pay for up to 55% of that roof again, the investment in a better product at the start is a wise one.

    • What is the GAF Golden Pledge Warranty?

Our GAF Master Elite Contractor status enables us to offer the GAF Golden Pledge Warranty. The Golden Pledge Warranty requires that the entire roof system use only GAF materials, and the finished job gets a 40-point inspection by a GAF representative. If the roof fails the inspection, we have to fix it immediately. If you ever need to file a warranty claim, GAF takes care of it.

    • How much could I be liable for if my roof fails under warranty?

The lists below show the differences between the warranties that contractors can offer. They're all considered 100% coverage within the non-prorated warranty period, but as you can see, their coverage varies.
