Economic History
Armstrong County sits on the Allegheny River northeast of Pittsburgh and built its economy on coal, plate glass, and aluminum. - How many layers can be on a roof before it has to come off?
- Pennsylvania's code allows two layers of asphalt shingles on a sound deck, but we tear off to the boards on nearly every job in these boroughs. A lot of these roofs are already at two, and the only way to see rotten plank decking is to look at it.
- Is plank decking a problem?
- Not by itself. Original one-by boards hold nails fine when they are sound, but gaps wider than the code allows need to be sheeted over, and any board soft from a long-running leak gets replaced. We price deck repair by the sheet or board so there is no guessing.

- Heat escaping the main house melts snow that then refreezes on the cold, low-slope porch roof below. The fix is ice-and-water membrane carried well past the wall line plus real intake and exhaust ventilation in the attic, not heat cable.
