Ice Dam
What Is an Ice Dam?
An ice dam forms when snow on a roof melts due to heat escaping from your home, then refreezes at the colder roof edges near the gutters. Over time, this creates a barrier of ice that prevents water from draining off the roof.
Once the water is trapped behind the ice dam, it can back up under shingles and leak into your home, causing damage to:
- Roof decking
- Attic insulation
- Drywall and ceilings
- Interior walls and flooring
- Electrical systems and fixtures
Ice dams are a common problem throughout Western Pennsylvania and the Sharon area, especially after heavy snowfall followed by freezing nights.
