Economic History
Lawrence County was formed in 1849 from parts of Beaver and Mercer counties at the confluence of the Shenango and Mahoning rivers, where the two form the Beaver River. New Castle grew into one of the country's leading tin-plate producers — the "Tin Plate Capital of the World" — alongside limestone quarrying, cement, and pottery. Ellwood City was founded in 1890 as a planned industrial town around tube and steel works. The county's industrial base contracted sharply after the 1970s; today healthcare, distribution along the I-76/I-376 corridors, and agriculture in the northern and western townships carry more of the economy.
