Economic History
Portage County takes its name from the eight-mile carry between the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas rivers that Native travelers and later settlers used to move between the Lake Erie and Ohio River watersheds. Kent grew as a canal and rail town - the Erie Railroad shops and the Seneca Chain of Lakes glassworks - and Kent State University, founded in 1910, now defines it; the May 4, 1970 shootings there are a permanent part of the national record.
