Economic History

Portage County takes its name from the eight-mile carry between the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas rivers that Native travelers and later settlers used to move between the Lake Erie and Ohio River watersheds. Kent grew as a canal and rail town - the Erie Railroad shops and the Seneca Chain of Lakes glassworks - and Kent State University, founded in 1910, now defines it; the May 4, 1970 shootings there are a permanent part of the national record. Ravenna has been the county seat since 1808 and hosted the Ravenna Arsenal during the Second World War. Aurora, Streetsboro, and Twinsburg's edge have grown as Cleveland and Akron commuter suburbs.

Housing Stock Across Portage County

Kent and Ravenna hold prewar cores - 1890-1930 frame houses with steep pitches, porches, and a large student rental inventory around the university. Aurora and Streetsboro are largely 1980s-and-newer subdivisions with complex hip-and-valley roofs. The eastern townships around Garrettsville and Rootstown are farmsteads and rural builds with long simple planes and metal outbuildings.

Permitting Norms

Ohio has no statewide residential roofing license, so requirements are set locally. The Portage County Building Department serves most townships, while Kent, Ravenna, Aurora, and Streetsboro run their own departments and typically require re-roof permits and contractor registration. Rental properties in Kent can also fall under city rental inspection.

Regional climate — Shenango Valley & the PA/OH border

This is a regional pattern, not a local one — it holds across our whole territory. Roughly 40 inches of rain and 50+ inches of snow a year, with lake-effect bands off Lake Erie in winter. Freeze-thaw is the dominant cool-season roof stressor from November through March. Summer brings straight-line wind events off the Ohio border and occasional hail from convective thunderstorm lines. What varies from town to town is which of those forces bites first on the specific roof profile that town was built for — that's what the page above covers.

Manufacturer credentials

  • GAF Master Elite Contractor. Held by a small percentage of roofing contractors nationwide. Required to install the GAF Golden Pledge warranty — 50 years on materials, 25 years on workmanship, transferable once. GAF inspects the completed roof before issuing the warranty.
  • Owens Corning Preferred Contractor.
  • IKO Craftsman.
  • Fully insured in Pennsylvania and Ohio. In-house crews — no subcontractors. Family-owned and operating out of Sharon, PA since 2000.

Path 1 — Insurance claim

For wind, hail, or storm-driven damage. We walk the roof with your insurance adjuster and document what we find so nothing that should be covered gets missed. We are not a public adjuster — that is a separate PA license — and we do not negotiate the settlement. We document damage, meet the adjuster, and rebuild what the carrier approves to code and to manufacturer spec.

Path 2 — Retail with financing

For roofs simply reaching the end of their life. 0% interest financing on shorter terms and long-term financing that keeps monthly payments low. Runs through a lending partner and is subject to credit approval. We walk through both paths in the free in-home estimate before you sign anything. See financing details →

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work on rental properties near Kent State?
Yes, and we schedule tear-offs around the academic calendar where we can. Rentals here often carry layered roofs and improvised past repairs, so the inspection comes first.
Is the snow here as bad as in Geauga County?
Not quite, but the northern townships get real lake-effect - 50 to 60 inches a season county-wide with more toward Aurora and Streetsboro than in Rootstown. We still treat eave ice protection as standard.
What is different about the newer Aurora and Streetsboro homes?
Big multi-plane roofs with lots of valleys, dead valleys against dormers, and attached-garage tie-ins. Those transitions are where leaks start, so flashing and valley detail matter more than the shingle brand.
Who issues permits in Portage County?
The county building department for most townships, and Kent, Ravenna, Aurora, and Streetsboro individually for work inside their limits. We pull the right one for the parcel.

I needed some wood and peak repairs done. Penn Ohio was quick to come and provide an estimate. Which was a very good estimate. The work was done with care and in one day. I'm very pleased with the work. They were also very easy to communicate with. I would strongly recommend.

I called Penn Ohio for a roof repair estimate on my home recently. Gary came to my home and I could tell that he cares about doing the best for the customer. He gave me a lot options to choose from and I felt very comfortable and not like he is trying to take advantage of me like other companies. 10/10 guy.

These guys were great to work with. I've dealt with contractors that want to spend two hours of my time hitting me with a PowerPoint followed by high pressure tactics to commit immediately. They offer one price if I sign today but magically

Great company to work with. Gary and his crew were great. They did a very nice job replacing the roof and gutters. The price was aggressive and the cleanup was excellent. Definitely recommend Gary and Dustin for your roofing needs
