Economic History
Ashtabula County is Ohio's largest county by land area and was part of the Connecticut Western Reserve, which is why its townships are laid out on the Reserve's five-mile survey grid. The Port of Ashtabula became one of the Great Lakes' major iron-ore and coal transfer points, and the harbor district still handles bulk cargo. Jefferson has been the county seat since 1811 and was a documented stop on the Underground Railroad.
