Economic History
Erie is Pennsylvania's only Great Lakes port and its fourth-largest city. Presque Isle sheltered the fleet Oliver Hazard Perry built and sailed to victory at the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813, and the harbor shaped everything after: shipping, then locomotives at GE's Lawrence Park works, plastics, and tool and die. Manufacturing employment has fallen sharply since the 1980s while health care, insurance, education, and Presque Isle tourism have grown. - Snow load and ice. Erie takes something like three times the seasonal snowfall, so we run ice-and-water shield well past the interior wall line, oversize the valley metal, and get the intake-to-exhaust ventilation ratio right so the deck stays cold.
- Are ice dams preventable or just a fact of life here?
- Largely preventable. Dams form when heat leaking into the attic melts snow that refreezes at the cold eave. Air-sealing the attic plane, adequate insulation, and balanced ventilation stop most of them; the membrane is the backup that keeps water out when one forms anyway.
- Do you work in the city of Erie and Millcreek?
- Yes, both, and we pull the required permits in each. The city and the township have separate code offices and separate inspection expectations, and we handle that paperwork as part of the job.
- When is the best time of year to re-roof in Erie?
- Late spring through October gives the best shingle sealing conditions. We do install in colder weather with hand-sealing at the critical courses, but if a roof can wait for warmer temperatures, it will seal better.
