Economic History

Lake County is Ohio's smallest county by area and one of its most densely settled, running thirty miles along Lake Erie east of Cleveland. Mentor was home to James A. Garfield, who ran his 1880 front-porch presidential campaign from Lawnfield, and the area became the largest nursery and ornamental-plant growing district in the country. Postwar suburbanization filled Willoughby, Eastlake, Wickliffe, and Willowick with housing for Cleveland-area workers, and lakefront industry and the Perry nuclear plant anchor the eastern end.

Housing Stock Across Lake County

Painesville and Willoughby hold nineteenth-century Western Reserve cores - steep gables, clapboard, and slate legacy on the oldest homes. The 1950s and 1960s built most of the rest: Eastlake, Willowick, and Wickliffe are wall-to-wall postwar capes and ranches on small lots, simple gable roofs, and original decking now on its second or third covering. Mentor mixes those with 1970s-1990s subdivisions and lakefront homes exposed to direct wind off the water.

Permitting Norms

Ohio has no statewide residential roofing license, so requirements are set locally. Mentor, Willoughby, Painesville, Eastlake, and the other municipalities run their own building departments and typically require a re-roof permit plus contractor registration; the Lake County Building Department covers unincorporated areas. Lakefront parcels can add setback and erosion-area review.

Regional climate — Shenango Valley & the PA/OH border

This is a regional pattern, not a local one — it holds across our whole territory. Roughly 40 inches of rain and 50+ inches of snow a year, with lake-effect bands off Lake Erie in winter. Freeze-thaw is the dominant cool-season roof stressor from November through March. Summer brings straight-line wind events off the Ohio border and occasional hail from convective thunderstorm lines. What varies from town to town is which of those forces bites first on the specific roof profile that town was built for — that's what the page above covers.

Manufacturer credentials

  • GAF Master Elite Contractor. Held by a small percentage of roofing contractors nationwide. Required to install the GAF Golden Pledge warranty — 50 years on materials, 25 years on workmanship, transferable once. GAF inspects the completed roof before issuing the warranty.
  • Owens Corning Preferred Contractor.
  • IKO Craftsman.
  • Fully insured in Pennsylvania and Ohio. In-house crews — no subcontractors. Family-owned and operating out of Sharon, PA since 2000.

Path 1 — Insurance claim

For wind, hail, or storm-driven damage. We walk the roof with your insurance adjuster and document what we find so nothing that should be covered gets missed. We are not a public adjuster — that is a separate PA license — and we do not negotiate the settlement. We document damage, meet the adjuster, and rebuild what the carrier approves to code and to manufacturer spec.

Path 2 — Retail with financing

For roofs simply reaching the end of their life. 0% interest financing on shorter terms and long-term financing that keeps monthly payments low. Runs through a lending partner and is subject to credit approval. We walk through both paths in the free in-home estimate before you sign anything. See financing details →

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you build a roof for lakefront wind?
Six-nail fastening patterns, sealed starter courses at eaves and rakes, and ridge and hip caps rated for the exposure. Most wind failures start at an unsealed rake edge, not in the middle of the field.
Why do the southern townships get more snow than the shoreline?
Lake bands pick up moisture over open water and drop it when the land rises inland. The escarpment south of Route 6 lifts that air, which is why Chardon-adjacent ground routinely doubles the shoreline totals.
Are postwar capes and ranches simpler jobs?
The geometry is, but many are on their second or third layer over original decking, and low-slope rear additions are common. We still tear off to the deck so nothing is hidden.
Do I need a permit in Mentor or Willoughby?
Generally yes, and both cities also register contractors. We handle registration and permitting for each municipality we work in.

I called Penn Ohio for a roof repair estimate on my home recently. Gary came to my home and I could tell that he cares about doing the best for the customer. He gave me a lot options to choose from and I felt very comfortable and not like he is trying to take advantage of me like other companies. 10/10 guy.

These guys were great to work with. I've dealt with contractors that want to spend two hours of my time hitting me with a PowerPoint followed by high pressure tactics to commit immediately. They offer one price if I sign today but magically
