Economic History
Akron was a canal town before it became the Rubber Capital of the World: Goodyear, Firestone, General Tire, and B.F. Goodrich all built there, and the city's population multiplied during the tire boom of the 1910s and 1920s. Tire production largely left after the 1970s, taking tens of thousands of jobs, and Akron rebuilt around polymer research, healthcare, and the University of Akron. Hudson, an intact Western Reserve town founded in 1799, and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park corridor give the county a very different northern half from its industrial core.
