The birthplace of the oil industry - Franklin's Victorian mansions, Oil City's hillside boom housing, and plateau snow loads.

Economic History

Venango County is where the world's petroleum industry began. Oil Creek's seeps drew Edwin Drake to nearby Titusville in 1859, and the boom that followed built Oil City into a refining and pipeline center and made Franklin, the county seat, wealthy enough to fill Elk Street with mansions. Pennzoil and Quaker State both trace their roots here. The industry moved west and the county has lost population steadily since; specialty manufacturing, healthcare, and the Allegheny River corridor's tourism carry it now.

Housing Stock Across Venango County

Franklin's Elk Street and the surrounding blocks hold one of the best collections of Victorian architecture in western Pennsylvania - Queen Anne turrets, complex gables, slate, and elaborate cornice work. Oil City is hillside housing built fast during the boom: steep lots, tall frame houses, stacked additions, and difficult access. Sugarcreek and Clintonville run to postwar and rural stock with simpler geometry.

Permitting Norms

Permits are issued municipality by municipality under the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code, and every home improvement contractor working in the state must hold an active HICPA registration with the Pennsylvania Attorney General. Oil City and Franklin run city code offices that require re-roof permits; the surrounding townships generally use third-party UCC agencies. Franklin's historic district adds review on street-visible materials.

Regional climate — Shenango Valley & the PA/OH border

This is a regional pattern, not a local one — it holds across our whole territory. Roughly 40 inches of rain and 50+ inches of snow a year, with lake-effect bands off Lake Erie in winter. Freeze-thaw is the dominant cool-season roof stressor from November through March. Summer brings straight-line wind events off the Ohio border and occasional hail from convective thunderstorm lines. What varies from town to town is which of those forces bites first on the specific roof profile that town was built for — that's what the page above covers.

Manufacturer credentials

  • GAF Master Elite Contractor. Held by a small percentage of roofing contractors nationwide. Required to install the GAF Golden Pledge warranty — 50 years on materials, 25 years on workmanship, transferable once. GAF inspects the completed roof before issuing the warranty.
  • Owens Corning Preferred Contractor.
  • IKO Craftsman.
  • Fully insured in Pennsylvania and Ohio. In-house crews — no subcontractors. Family-owned and operating out of Sharon, PA since 2000.

Path 1 — Insurance claim

For wind, hail, or storm-driven damage. We walk the roof with your insurance adjuster and document what we find so nothing that should be covered gets missed. We are not a public adjuster — that is a separate PA license — and we do not negotiate the settlement. We document damage, meet the adjuster, and rebuild what the carrier approves to code and to manufacturer spec.

Path 2 — Retail with financing

For roofs simply reaching the end of their life. 0% interest financing on shorter terms and long-term financing that keeps monthly payments low. Runs through a lending partner and is subject to credit approval. We walk through both paths in the free in-home estimate before you sign anything. See financing details →

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you handle turrets, dormers, and complex Victorian roofs?
That is most of what Franklin's older blocks are. Those roofs are hand work at every transition - step flashing, cricket details, and careful valley work - and they take longer than a suburban tear-off. We quote them from an on-roof inspection.
How do you access Oil City's hillside houses?
Carefully and with a plan. Many properties have no driveway at grade, so we stage from the street, use smaller dumpsters or trailer loading, and protect the neighbors' walls and plantings before the first bundle moves.
Is slate repair possible or does it all have to come off?
Sound slate with failed flashing is worth repairing. Slate that is delaminating across the field is at the end of its life, and patching it just moves the leak. We tell you which one you have after we look.
How far are you from Franklin and Oil City?
About an hour from our Sharon shop, so this is comfortable regular-service territory for us, including storm response.

I called Penn Ohio for a roof repair estimate on my home recently. Gary came to my home and I could tell that he cares about doing the best for the customer. He gave me a lot options to choose from and I felt very comfortable and not like he is trying to take advantage of me like other companies. 10/10 guy.

These guys were great to work with. I've dealt with contractors that want to spend two hours of my time hitting me with a PowerPoint followed by high pressure tactics to commit immediately. They offer one price if I sign today but magically

Great company to work with. Gary and his crew were great. They did a very nice job replacing the roof and gutters. The price was aggressive and the cleanup was excellent. Definitely recommend Gary and Dustin for your roofing needs
