Economic History
Mahoning County was formed in 1846 from Trumbull and Columbiana counties. Youngstown became one of the largest steel producers in the United States, anchored by Youngstown Sheet and Tube and Republic Steel along the Mahoning River. September 19, 1977 — "Black Monday" — marked the closure of Youngstown Sheet and Tube's Campbell Works and the beginning of a collapse that cost the valley roughly 50,000 manufacturing jobs.
