Economic History

Mercer County was carved out of Allegheny County in 1800 as part of the Last Purchase donation lands set aside for Revolutionary War veterans. The early economy ran on distilleries, grist mills, and sawmills. Canals to the Allegheny River (1834) and to Erie (1844) opened the county to coal and iron mining, and Mercer County block coal became a nationally known product. The first blast furnaces fired in 1838; Sharon Iron Company opened its rolling mill in 1851, the first steel mill followed in 1887, and Sharon Steel Works opened in 1896. Twentieth-century industry was reshaped by the Camp Reynolds Army base (converted to an industrial park after WWII) and by the Pymatuning (1934) and Shenango (1967) dam projects. Farming — sheep, dairy, and oats, some on Amish farms — still covers roughly 42% of the county today.

Housing Stock Across Mercer County

Two distinct patterns: dense pre-1940 worker and merchant housing in the Shenango Valley cities (Sharon, Farrell, Sharpsville, Wheatland, Hermitage's older core) and lower-density mid-century-through-modern subdivisions and farmhouses across the rural townships and around Grove City, Mercer borough, Greenville, and Stoneboro.

Permitting Norms

Roofing permits in Mercer County are issued at the municipal level — each borough, township, and city runs its own code office. The city of Sharon and the city of Hermitage both operate their own permit desks; smaller boroughs often rely on a shared code officer or a third-party inspector. Contractor registration under Pennsylvania's Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act (attorney-general HICPA registration) applies statewide; some municipalities require additional local registration.

Regional climate — Shenango Valley & the PA/OH border

This is a regional pattern, not a local one — it holds across our whole territory. Roughly 40 inches of rain and 50+ inches of snow a year, with lake-effect bands off Lake Erie in winter. Freeze-thaw is the dominant cool-season roof stressor from November through March. Summer brings straight-line wind events off the Ohio border and occasional hail from convective thunderstorm lines. What varies from town to town is which of those forces bites first on the specific roof profile that town was built for — that's what the page above covers.

Manufacturer credentials

  • GAF Master Elite Contractor. Held by a small percentage of roofing contractors nationwide. Required to install the GAF Golden Pledge warranty — 50 years on materials, 25 years on workmanship, transferable once. GAF inspects the completed roof before issuing the warranty.
  • Owens Corning Preferred Contractor.
  • IKO Craftsman.
  • Fully insured in Pennsylvania and Ohio. In-house crews — no subcontractors. Family-owned and operating out of Sharon, PA since 2000.

Path 1 — Insurance claim

For wind, hail, or storm-driven damage. We walk the roof with your insurance adjuster and document what we find so nothing that should be covered gets missed. We are not a public adjuster — that is a separate PA license — and we do not negotiate the settlement. We document damage, meet the adjuster, and rebuild what the carrier approves to code and to manufacturer spec.

Path 2 — Retail with financing

For roofs simply reaching the end of their life. 0% interest financing on shorter terms and long-term financing that keeps monthly payments low. Runs through a lending partner and is subject to credit approval. We walk through both paths in the free in-home estimate before you sign anything. See financing details →

Penn-Ohio did good work at a very reasonable price. Other quotes were ~30% higher. Austin got us on the calendar quickly and the team replaces our roof in 6 hours.

I needed some wood and peak repairs done. Penn Ohio was quick to come and provide an estimate. Which was a very good estimate. The work was done with care and in one day. I'm very pleased with the work. They were also very easy to communicate with. I would strongly recommend.

I called Penn Ohio for a roof repair estimate on my home recently. Gary came to my home and I could tell that he cares about doing the best for the customer. He gave me a lot options to choose from and I felt very comfortable and not like he is trying to take advantage of me like other companies. 10/10 guy.

These guys were great to work with. I've dealt with contractors that want to spend two hours of my time hitting me with a PowerPoint followed by high pressure tactics to commit immediately. They offer one price if I sign today but magically

Great company to work with. Gary and his crew were great. They did a very nice job replacing the roof and gutters. The price was aggressive and the cleanup was excellent. Definitely recommend Gary and Dustin for your roofing needs
