Penn Ohio Roofing
Roofing Contractor in Erie County, OH
Lake Erie's western basin - Sandusky's quarry-stone and Victorian housing, harbor villages, and wind-driven lakefront exposure.
Economic History
Sandusky Bay made Erie County a shipping, fishing, and ice-harvesting center in the nineteenth century, and it has been a resort economy ever since Cedar Point opened as a bathing beach in 1870 and grew into one of the largest amusement parks in the world. Sandusky was also a documented final stop on the Underground Railroad, where freedom seekers boarded boats for Canada. Vermilion built wooden ships and now runs on harbor tourism, and Huron remains a working lake port. Tourism, food processing, and light manufacturing carry the county today.
Housing Stock Across Erie County
Sandusky's older wards hold 1870-1930 housing including limestone and brick built from local quarry stone, with steep pitches, dormers, and slate history; the Old House District near the bay is largely intact. Vermilion's Harbour Town is a preserved nineteenth-century village. Across the county there is a large stock of cottages, converted seasonal homes, and lakefront properties with additions built in stages.
Permitting Norms
Ohio has no statewide residential roofing license, so requirements are set locally. Sandusky, Huron, and Vermilion run their own building departments and require permits for re-roofing; the Erie County Building Department serves the townships. Shoreline parcels can trigger floodplain or erosion-area review.

Regional climate — Shenango Valley & the PA/OH border
This is a regional pattern, not a local one — it holds across our whole territory. Roughly 40 inches of rain and 50+ inches of snow a year, with lake-effect bands off Lake Erie in winter. Freeze-thaw is the dominant cool-season roof stressor from November through March. Summer brings straight-line wind events off the Ohio border and occasional hail from convective thunderstorm lines. What varies from town to town is which of those forces bites first on the specific roof profile that town was built for — that's what the page above covers.
Manufacturer credentials
- GAF Master Elite Contractor. Held by a small percentage of roofing contractors nationwide. Required to install the GAF Golden Pledge warranty — 50 years on materials, 25 years on workmanship, transferable once. GAF inspects the completed roof before issuing the warranty.
- Owens Corning Preferred Contractor.
- IKO Craftsman.
- Fully insured in Pennsylvania and Ohio. In-house crews — no subcontractors. Family-owned and operating out of Sharon, PA since 2000.
Path 1 — Insurance claim
For wind, hail, or storm-driven damage. We walk the roof with your insurance adjuster and document what we find so nothing that should be covered gets missed. We are not a public adjuster — that is a separate PA license — and we do not negotiate the settlement. We document damage, meet the adjuster, and rebuild what the carrier approves to code and to manufacturer spec.
Path 2 — Retail with financing
For roofs simply reaching the end of their life. 0% interest financing on shorter terms and long-term financing that keeps monthly payments low. Runs through a lending partner and is subject to credit approval. We walk through both paths in the free in-home estimate before you sign anything. See financing details →

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is wind a bigger issue than snow here?
- Yes. Erie County sits west of the heavy snowbelt but gets long fetch across open water, so uplift at rakes, eaves, and ridges is the failure we design against - sealed starter courses, six-nail patterns, and rated caps.
- Do you work on lakefront and seasonal cottages?
- We do. Cottages here were frequently built light and expanded in stages, so we verify framing and decking before quoting rather than assuming a standard tear-off applies.
- What about Sandusky's historic Old House District?
- Those are careful jobs - steep pitches, dormer clusters, slate history, and street-visible detail. We inspect on the roof and quote the actual work, including any review the city requires.
- How far is Sandusky from your Sharon office?
- About two and a half hours. We take work there in scheduled blocks and are upfront that emergency response times will be longer than in our core Mercer and Trumbull county market.

What Our Customers Are Saying in Erie County
Penn-Ohio did good work at a very reasonable price. Other quotes were ~30% higher. Austin got us on the calendar quickly and the team replaces our roof in 6 hours.
Penn Ohio just recently replaced my roof. Removed all the old material down to bare wood, and replaced with beautiful new shingles. Cleaned up all the trash. Everything done in one day! My roof looks great. Thanks Penn Ohio!
I needed some wood and peak repairs done. Penn Ohio was quick to come and provide an estimate. Which was a very good estimate. The work was done with care and in one day. I'm very pleased with the work. They were also very easy to communicate with. I would strongly recommend.
I called Penn Ohio for a roof repair estimate on my home recently. Gary came to my home and I could tell that he cares about doing the best for the customer. He gave me a lot options to choose from and I felt very comfortable and not like he is trying to take advantage of me like other companies. 10/10 guy.
These guys were great to work with. I've dealt with contractors that want to spend two hours of my time hitting me with a PowerPoint followed by high pressure tactics to commit immediately. They offer one price if I sign today but magically
Great company to work with. Gary and his crew were great. They did a very nice job replacing the roof and gutters. The price was aggressive and the cleanup was excellent. Definitely recommend Gary and Dustin for your roofing needs
