Economic History
Jefferson County was created in 1804 and grew on white pine lumber floated down the Susquehanna tributaries, then on bituminous coal and clay products. Brookville has been the county seat since 1830 and its Main Street historic district is one of the best-preserved nineteenth-century streetscapes in the region. Punxsutawney, the county's largest town, is known worldwide for the Groundhog Day ceremony at Gobbler's Knob, held every February 2 since 1887. Coal and clay have faded; timber, healthcare, and tourism carry the local economy now.
